Hi.

I always wondered, what inside a CCD or CMOS sensor, defines the dynamic range? Some CCD's have greater dynamic range than others, I heard somewhere that it was due to the size of the individual light sensors.

Tnx.
Dan.

There are so many factors,

photosite size, sensor size, paint options like knee attenuation, gamma settings, bit depth (!!!), RAW capture, proper exposure, delivery format

I think, though, the two most important are photosite size and bit depth. That's why everyone over at RedUser is so excited about the new line of Full Frame 36x24mm sensors. That's massive.

The secret to High Dynamic Range photography is the ability of the camera to capture multiple photographs with different exposures. For example one photo will be overexposed in order to capture shadow detail and another photo will be underexposed to capture the highlights. And another photo will be moderately exposed in order to capture the midtones.
