You can see a real grainy shot when Michael is in the van at night at the beginning of the episode. They shoot on a Sony HDW-F900, right?

I always thought digital held up well in the dark, did they shoot that particular scene with maybe a consumer grade model or am I just mistaken?

I haven't seen that episode. But I've noticed in previous episodes that interior car shots -- particularly from the front corners of a car -- tend to look slightly softer than the rest of the show. I think they're sometimes using smaller cameras mounted in the cars for convenience, rather than whatever the rest of the show is shot with.

If memory serves, they seem to use lip-stick cameras mounted in the cars to give it more of that documentary look; hance why the car stuff looks substantially different than the non-car stuff. But, it's fine for them because it just feeds into that documentary/reality TV show look.
