I just rented a Chrosziel follow focus and matte box. I was surprised at how expensive items like these are stored at the rental house. I was checking out the follow focus unit and noticed it has a lot of backlash. The said "oh, here grab another one", and handed me a bin full of follow focus units. The were all just piled in there and all dinged up. I finally found one that worked good, but is that typical? Is that just how rental equipment is handled?

I've got a mental list of certain hire places that I will not use.

equipment is usually "dinged up" by the users in the field. not while stored in a facility. While doing a proper check out of equipment your suppose to be able to pickout the best unit on hand at that time. If the house owns 15 units and 10 are out you probably got the pickens left over by the renters ahead of you.. May I ask what the rental rate was for the units?
