TMC played Ice Station Zebra today. I love watching TMC because they bplay the films they present in their proper format. I have seen this film many times before and have always loved it, but I have never seen it on a giant tv screen in it's proper SuperPanavision aspect ratio and I was TRULY BLOWN AWAY by the beauty of it's cinematography. They had a short doc on the second unit director before the film showed showing how he had gotten some of those great shots as well as others he had done in other films. It was fascinating. I now have a new appreciation of a film I have loved for years. Pan and scan is EVIL and should be purged from the face of the earth!!!

I remember seeing it in Cinerama !! It looked pretty good then , although the studio ice scenes did look a bit phony !

This of course is a film made infamous in some circles as one that Howard Hughes, stuck in some form of obsessive madness watched over and over again for days and possibly weeks on end, locked in a Las Vegas screening room. Just think, if it had been pan and scan he might have REALLY been crazy.

Like so much of the cold war, it was a bloated exercise in excess. Too long, too slow, too complicated and yet, a memorable movie.

Only a bit?

I was amused that the detonator had a label which said DETONATOR in Cyrillic characters.

The under water footage was looked pretty good.
