I think you have to join the service to become one. Specifically infantry.

hi
in Israel every boy turn age 18 has to go to the army for 3 years
because i study film&tv at high school they sent me to be at video unit
i was shooting combats and spacial operations
while i learn a lot about camera i had a very big moral issue with it
because it's very stupid to think about aesthetic when there is real killing going around you
and your first instinct as cameramen is to make it look beautiful
and let me tell you there is no beauty in war
after 2 year in the filed i moved to the mother unit and start to make propaganda movies for the army
that was nice because i used light, camera movement(dolly's, crane, steadicam)and storytelling
but until this day i having dreams about the things i saw so................
you can learn a lot and you can loss a lot

Ram,

Thank you very much for your reply. I found your story very interesting considering I grew up in Israel so I can really relate to . I moved to New Jersey before I could join though. I've lost many in the wars over there, so believe me I'm not ignorant to the reality of bloodshed. It is more than likely that my interest in a military career is due to the militaristic ideals I grew up with. So I thought why not combine my nature with my passion. I must thank you again for taking the time to answer my post.

best,
Ari.

I wonder if they even do combat photography any more -- in the U.S. that is. They have TV news crews with them in many cases. In others, there's FOIA to worry about, so they might decide not to.
