It's being reported on CML that Tony Imi BSC has died. I did a movie with Tony several years ago as an operator and he was a lovely guy and a great DP.

My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.

I never met or worked with Mr Imi but I thought he seemed to master making lower budget films of the 1990s/2000s look incredibly rich and belying their budgets. A good example would be Paul WS Anderson's debut Shopping, which I think looked more striking, contrasty and interesting than many of the big budget movies of the time.

Imi also delivered some beautiful images for films directed by Bryan Forbes in the 1970s, such as the elegant looking The Slipper and the Rose and the visually stunning International Velvet. Quite a cameraman.

This is very sad news.

I worked as his trainee a few years ago. I'll always remember when at the end of one day, towards the end of the shoot he took me aside, put his arm around me and told me 'I've had a word with production. forget about the video monitors tomorrow and how about you start loading for me?'. It really meant a lot getting getting my first proper clapper loader job from someone I respected as much as him. He was a really, really nice man to work for and a great dp. A proper old-school cameraman who had respect for and from everyone on the crew, not just the camera team. 5 always hoped to work with him again.
