Verne wrote "The Professional Cameraman's Handbook", and several others. He taught at AFI and Cal State Long Beach.
He was a mentor for me and here is a story about Verne.
When all the students were at the first class of the semester, he would try to scare them off. He would tell us there were three text books and to read the first 100 pages of the driest one by the next class. It worked! We were always left with just the serious students that wanted to learn, instead of the students that wanted an easy A or B.
The classes that come to mind are Lighting and Special Effects.
If you want to learn cinematography fast, find a very good D.P. that has great lighting. Then work for free. There is no way to learn faster.

Did Verne pass away? He was a great guy. Old Skool. I have a signed copy of his book that my cousin gave me. His son was an AC but I forget his name. I'm sorry to hear this. He was one of a kind.
