I, for the last year have been very intirested in learning cinematography. I am a film student and would like to be able to pactice this art style as often as I can.

What "if there is any one important detail about cinematography that I should learn" should I be practicing?

Asking yourself "what is the story I'm trying to tell here?" The difference between cinematography and photography is the temporal element, so you really have to consider how you're using this.
