It really depends on the shot but I would say that any outdoor shots with sky would need a power window or two to fix up. In avid you just have primary Lift, Gamma, gain controls which can be used effectively to darken the shot overall without losing everything you are looking for but ti wont be the same as using a grading solution.

Can you describe the shot? You could make a matte but the problem is that unless your shot is a lockoff it will have to be a traveling matte i.e. for sky replacement or a second grade for the sky. The nice thing about a DI box is that it can do a window with tracking such that you could draw the window and have the window move with he shot and the relative size of the object being graded in that window.

You could go for an overall grade in Avid by knocking the shot down pushing it a bit blue and sinking the blacks but if you have a nice full sunny sky it will stand out. Again it is hard to say without knowing what the shot or shots are.
