Being an indy director/ producer, one of my favorite things is to find very useful fulm making stuff for FREE!! I think I found such an item. Lightworks an open source NLE that looks really cool. The interface looks terrific and quite honestly, it looks better than some NLEs that cost quite a bit. Here's the link:

An editor friend of mine loves Lightworks (he used to own one before everything became Avid), they must be doing a big push to get a base going again.

I've had a bit of a play with this. It doesn't have the well known Lightworks console yet, but it's still great fun for editing. The filing system for shots is impressive, speaking to my editor friend he mentioned that AVID have just about caught up with what Lightworks had 20 years ago in this regard.
Perhaps currently not the NLE that you'd use for an effects heavy piece and using multiple media sources, more for narrative and documentaries.
