Wondering if it would be a good idea to purchase a spot meter of my own? Rent one per shoot? Or is it possible to get producers to buy the equipment for you (if the budget allows)?

Thanks for your feedback!

Producers tend not to buy personal equipment for the DP, they'll rent equipment for a production. However, I know cases where it has happened, but they're the exceptions.

I'd tend to get an incident meter before I'd buy a spot meter, it's much more useful and quicker to use.

Incident meters are definitely more useful in most situations. Spot meters can be kinda pricy. I've gotten by for years with an old-school Sekonic Studio III analog light meter.

If you know you're getting paid for a gig, invest in the meter with credit and pay it off when ready. In a round about way, the producer is buying it for you ;)
