Hi all.
Any advice for a first time director in terms of how to choose a cinematographer, how much technical / camera know-how should a first-time director have? How savvy should the director be in terms of lenses, camera position choices, composition etc....How thought through should scenes be? Should they already be story-boarded or will a cinematographer expect to have to hold hands with the director through the whole process? How important is chemistry? I imagine long days can test a relationship between director and DP. Any insight would be great. Also what are the rookie mistakes first time directors typically make from the point of view of the DP..?

Thanks all. Love this site!

I would say this:

You only need to know what you want and be able to articulate what you need from the scene/shot/film(to the DoP and cast/crew).

You need someone you get along with and who you can trust.

I don't think there are any specifics to how much you should know aside from what you (and the film) needs. How you want to work with the DoP and run your film, is your choice. I'd recommend, though knowing the film, through and through. If that means you want to story-board the whole thing, go for it. If you know you want X or y shot, then do whatever you can to make sure you get X or Y shot. There is no right way, i don't think. Also no director I've worked with, first time, or super uber auteur veteran with all the money and time in the world (ok never really happened), have ever approached their films, and working with me, in the same way.

My 2 cents.

I seem to recall we had a whole thread on this topic not too long ago...

Some issues were covered here for starters:
