Help with a lighting setup

Hi everyone,

I'm shooting a short film next week and need some technical advice of how can I finalize my ideas. Look at the picture below... it's a hallway and the scene is between a father and a son who are coming home by the night. For this scene I have a practical lamp, in the left side of the shot. That will be the key light for the son... the father will be on the ambient light. And there is my problem... I need to create a kind of light that is suspended and fleeting, with less shadows possible. I remember Remdrandt when I see this image in my head... A light that is exterior to the scene and have a gentle degrade between light and shadow. Kind of light with particles...

I'm a bit confused and I don't know if you guys can help me. Waiting some answers. Thank you!
