Does anyone know of a safe, reliable website where I can download Xvid from? So far, Ive tried downloading this codec from two sites, including Cnet. In both instances, this laptop gives me a message saying that this file is unsafe. And the only option given to me is to delete the file.

I might have started off at xvid.org, the project homepage.

What are you trying to achieve, anyway? I'm not sure how different it is to just using h.264.

I admit that I'm totally new to manually installing codecs and don't really have that much knowledge about which ones are better. Basically, Ive assembled bunches of stills together with Virtual Dub to create time lapse sequences. Though the file sizes are huge - one 16 second clip is over 1GB and the other (a one minute, 20 second clip) is over 4GB. I'd like to reduce the file size while still maintaining quality. Very soon, I'd like to upload the videos to youtube / vimeo etc. And I'd also like to play them through a media player connected to a HDTV.

Yea, I'll give h.264 a go too.
