Hello everyone

Ive been working on a project a while ago and the producer doesn't want to pay the bill. Can a DP block the rights to publish/distribute the film untill the bills are payed? (author rights)

There is no contract between me and producer, theres no contract between producer and director, in fact there are no contracts at all. All rental companies (camera, light, grip) say their bills are payed, its just the crew now thats still waiting.

I expect it depends on the country. In the UK you could certainly reserve your rights but you would probably have to do it explicitly. There's no contract of employment so copyright in the images would belong to you if you didn't assign it but as I say it depends on the applicable law and the intent of the parties. There is always an implied contract. You would need to take advice.

I would just send him a certified mail invoice, first. Then if he doesn't respond to that, look into small claims court.
