Recommend Photography Text Book

Someone asked me for a recommendation on a text book for introduction to photography.  This will be used as a teaching aid for beginners and intermediate students and will initially focus on still photography and possibly transition into motion picture.  Any help is appreciated.

'Basic Photography' by Michael Langford.

The book I was told to take to college, along with Hauser's Social History of Art, and I know which one I'd take to a desert island.

I agree with with Mark, The Ilford manual of Photography is also a very good book.
