Just bought a Canon 814 Auto Zoom from a German photography seller.  Cleaned, well-maintained, reportedly testing and working with film.  Just put the batteries in.  Everything runs, but the fold-out hand grip, which contains 4 AA batteries, feels real hot.  Is this normal?

Definitely not normal.  I'd get those batteries out of there ASAP before they leak all over the inside.  I agree... likely a short somewhere.
