The mini major business has always been tough, one train wreck can take the studio down. The majors are much more diversified and can absorb the big budget flops they produce each year.

Strangely it almost seems like the opposite happened in this case. The company stopped making so many movies and also had a succession of flops at the same time as it expanded into a lot of other businesses (including dog food of course).
