In many traditional 2D animation film's credit roll there appears the title director of photography or cinematographer.

Can somebody tell me what they really do, when working on films like that?

Do they scheme the lighting and camera movement and communicate it to the art director/animators?

I work with a few traditional 2D animators and the "cinematography" position would come from the storyboarding process of the cartoon. A lot of the theory that goes behind how you set stuff up with a camera can also go into moving drawings. Granted, there's a slightly different process with staging for animation because animators want to show off the characters as much as possible, but traditional film angles and rules can still work their way in.

I've never discussed lighting in any commission but camera movement comes up a lot (and is a pain in the ass to communicate).
