Need to shoot band (5 piece...about 20'x25' footprint) on covered exterior stage...in full summer sun. How much HMI power is needed to 'equalize' the shadow of the covering? Additional problem...the back ground is mostly white buildings.

It means that the band takes up 500 sq. ft.

I would take your light meter to the location and take readings if possible.

Generally you are looking at least a 2 stop difference (and more like 4 on the white walls, but you don?t need to hold much detail in that).

I guess 2 par 4k's and couple of hard 42x42 + 12x12 silver butterfly may do a great job. If I was you Ill try to keep whites ( background ) at a max of 3 zones above from the middle ( are the band caucasic? ) I am talking Luminances with a spot meter. And for CUs and M.S a 4x4 diff and one of the 4ks + some edgy kickers from a Hard 42x42 bounce will do some great job. good luck, hope this helps. As Mr Zanit Says, go to loc and meter so, youll know how exactly is the issue, I did something similar and worked with 7274, did really good with that emulsion.
Good luck
