Hello All,

I've been reading posts on here for a while and every now and then see you all talking about whether or not a particular camera has a registration pin and / or pressure plate.

so my questions are

1) what exactly do they do?, and
2) does a good sound sync camera have to have these in order to work well??

thanks for your time,

A.

've been reading posts on here for a while and every now and then see you all talking about whether or not a particular camera has a registration pin and / or pressure plate.

1) what exactly do they do?

The pressure plate holds the film against the gate so that it lies precisely in the plane of focus of the taking lens. Super 8 cameras incorporate a plastic pressure plate within the disposable cartridge; all other formats (R8, 16, 35 ,etc) use a high strength polished steel plate. Most (not all) cameras use a pull-down claw to advance the film from frame to frame. Some cameras (such as the Mitchell NC and the Arri SR) use a registration pin to lock the film in place during exposure to eliminate "gate weave" and other registration problems.

2) does a good sound sync camera have to have these in order to work well?

All cameras need a pressure plate. Some good sound sync cameras also incorporate a registration pin, some don't. The Cinema Products CP-16 for example did not have a registration pin but was considered a camera with good registration.
Cameras with registration pins are more necessary when filming material that will be used with complex optical or computer based matting techniques.
