I'm shooting a short using a tungsten arri lighting package and wanted to know if anyone had any good ideas for homemade diffusing silks.

If you're talking about making 4'x4' frames of diffusion, gels aren't that expensive so I'm not sure what the point of using homespun materials. Most are rather thick and light-inefficient.

Muslin is probably the most common cloth material used for diffusion, although it is very heavy so you need pretty strong lights behind it.

Tracing paper (like 1000H paper) is also a good, cheap, but fragile material for diffusion frames.

Grid Cloth is based on nylon ripstock fabric so you could try that if you can find something thin enough.

Nylon sheers like used in curtains don't work very well (but then, I don't think silk does either) because you still get some hard light coming through it with a star-shaped hot spot on the material.

Shower curtains. If you are in a large town you can usually find a great selection. Try and look for shower curtains in a third world nation and good luck. They usually have flowers on them.

Cost is not always the driving force of ?doing it yourself.?
Sometimes it is just the satisfaction. ;)

You should find all that you will need here.
I have bought from these folks with good results. :)
