Is adding smoke is a good way to make the light soft.........how far is it applicable.....but i found that the way of using smoke will affect continuity of a scene. It is because the amount of smoke may differ in different shots

Smoke will soften the lights but it will also soften everything else as well. You usually use either a general fog machine which fogs an entire area or a cooled fog machine which makes the fog roll on the ground.

On my last short the director wanted a dream sequence, "make it look cheesy as possible" (It was a comedy).

Although it looked cheesy I?ve used smoke in other situations to soften the image, desaturate color, or just add a little bit to the background. It makes lighting a bit tougher to deal with and the crew is usually waiting around after each take while the fog is brought back to somewhat of the same level to keep continuity. It's hard to control and you have to be careful not to over do it if all you want to is add a little something to the scene.

Sometimes you're better off to grab a few guys and tell them to light up a cigarette. It'll be subtle and costs less.
