So I'm thinking of offering color correction service on a G5 mac system using FinalTouch HD.

Our work would be solely for output to broadcast or DVD medium. Since those formats are 8 bit, I was wondering if using a calibrated 8bit CRT/LCD monitor using an ecinema 10 bit to 8 bit converter would be decent enough for those purposes.

The theory being that since the color grade needs to be "8 bit proof" displaying the result at 10 bit is not realistic anyway (and in our case a waste of money). Our product would NEVER be output back to film.

I'd appreciate a discussion of these points.

Thanks!

Hi,

Yes, an 8-bit CRT would be fine so long as you are correcting from a higher bit-depth original. One prominent colour correction system uses this paradigm.

However, if you are in an SDI-connected situation, you can get SDI monitors pretty cheap these days.

What about an 8 Bit LCD?

Do you have a link to some info on SDI and a name to drop as far as one of these "cheap" SDI HD displays?
